Our lusts are never satisfied! They are like fire, no matter how much wood you add to the bonfire, the fire never says “enough”

What then really satisfies?

Scripture:

Isaiah 55:1-3 ESV

“Come, everyone who thirsts,

come to the waters;

and he who has no money,

come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk

without money and without price.

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,

and your labor for that which does not satisfy?

Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,

and delight yourselves in rich food.

Incline your ear, and come to me;

hear, that your soul may live;

and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,

my steadfast, sure love for David.

Observation:

The woman at the well was thirsty for something—she did not know what but five husbands had not satisfied her but instead left a drought in that woman’s soul (John 4:16-17).

Jesus spoke gently to her “The water I give you will become a well of water springing up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14)

When Jesus rebuked the lukewarm Christians at Laodicea, He described them as “wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked,” yet they thought they were rich! (Revelation 3:14-22)

Look around! “Why spend money on what is not bread and your labor on what does not satisfy?”

Our lusts are never satisfied! They are like fire, no matter how much wood you add to the bonfire, the fire never says “enough” (Proverbs 30:15-16).

What then really satisfies?

Deuteronomy 8:3 says, “[God] humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know” (for what reason?) “that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” ESV

We were built by God for God. All our appetites point us to Him! Each appetite can only be truly satisfied in Him! Whatever you desire, if it is good, it can be found in God.

What the world offers is like alcohol on a hot day—the more you drink, the thirstier and more dehydrated you become.

Application:

Isaiah 55:2b-3a ESV

Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,

and delight yourselves in rich food.

Incline your ear, and come to me;

hear, that your soul may live;

Every morning and every evening the Jews offered sacrifices and drew near to God. Joshua was similarly commanded to draw near to God every morning and every evening.

Joshua 1:8 ESV

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

True prosperity and true success begin in the spirit, work into the soul and reveal themselves in our reality (3 John 2) as we obey the Word.

So what shall we do to avoid being a hearer and yet not doing? We choose to draw near and listen intently to the Word of the Lord every morning and every evening. When we see God and hear Him, and begin to imitate God the way a son imitates his father Ephesians 5:1), then we will find what truly satisfies our soul.

Satisfaction guaranteed!

Prayer:

Father God, we choose today to seek Your face and to hear Your voice. We will draw near, morning and evening that we might gain the only thing that can satisfy, that we might hear the Word of the Lord and truly live!

In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.

  1. Ken,
    This post reminds me of Proverbs 27:20 Hell and Destruction are never full;
    So the eyes of man are never satisfied.

    Giving in to sinful appetites only increases our desires for those appetites.
