When God is Silent

cleanse yourself spiritually with SOAP Study in the Word--giving God your whole heart

God is silent when we harden our hearts. Is God hidden from you? Has God gone silent in your life?

Amos 8:11 ESV

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,

“when I will send a famine on the land—

not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,

but of hearing the words of the Lord.

Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Deuteronomy 8:3). The very worst judgment against any man is for God to go silent (Matthew 15:13-14).

God goes silent when we sell ourselves into wickedness for He grieves over us. We do not have the ears to hear or the eyes to see. Those who bear the Word of the Lord are ignored while those who tell us what we want to hear grow rich and fat. Yet God is angry with the wicked every day (Psalm 7:11) and they are only fattening themselves for the day of slaughter (James 5:5).

The wise become silent in the wicked and evil day (Amos 5:13). The wicked do not want the truth.

Leave the wicked alone (Psalm 37:1). He has chosen death (John 8:24). You choose life (John 10:9-10).

There are many souls in the valley of decision (Joel 3:14). God is hidden from them (Isaiah 59:2) but God strives with them and seeks them out (Genesis 6:3). He troubles them but in their trouble will they seek the Lord and pay attention to His ways (Psalm 119:71-72)?

Not everyone will heed the Word of the Lord; not everyone will do what He says. Speak and those who have ears to hear will be drawn to the truth of the words.

Speak and those who have stopped up their ears and shut their eyes to the light will turn and rage and vent. Leave them be. They chose not to hear God and God will choose not to hear them. They will die of hunger in the night.

The Word of the Lord separates the righteous from the wicked. His truth is pure, holy and undefiled. All have sinned but the wicked cling to their sin while the righteous forsake their sin and cling to God.

Cling to God and His Word, seek Him, repent of your sin and draw near to Him. Pay attention when trouble comes and seek the Lord and learn to follow His ways.

Lord God, Father, giver of the Bread of Heaven, the One who satisfies my soul! Grant me a heart of discernment! Help me find those who are hungry for Your Word!

Lord God, speak to me. I am hungry. Lord God, grant me Your visions and dreams that my soul will be satisfied with the rain of heaven and that I might delight in the dew of the earth.

Bring to me those who desire You and I will teach and train them in Your ways.

Thank You Lord for speaking to me today and for hearing my request.

In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.

Great post. I’ve been asked about a silent God a lot lately. “What do I do with God won’t answer me?” I think the biggest thing is…are we listening? Are we reading His Word? Praying at all?

I would refer them to Isaiah 58 as a first impulse but I think a big part of the silence is not listening. I had a friend who would give himself “spiritual shock therapy” on occasion. He would go someplace, pack a lunch, bring a blanket and a Bible and spend the day seeking the Lord, praying, and reading His Bible. I’ve decided that in large part, that was the purpose of the Sabbath. It was a day to put first things first–God and family.

A great reminder. It can be so easy to put our faith on ‘autopilot’ rather than relying on God daily. Whenever we do that, our begins to harden.
