Waiting for God
The Bible gives some extraordinary promises to those who wait for God. Are you waiting for Him? What does this even mean?
Indeed, none who wait for You shall be put to shame;
We are dependent upon God. Our wisdom, our knowledge, our goodness, our righteousness, our faithfulness—they are nothing and wholly insufficient to overcome the obstacles we face.
Waiting upon the Lord is all about Deuteronomy 8:3 (ESV):
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
We cannot stand in faith (1 Jn 5:4) without the Word of the Lord (Rom 10:17). We may live or we may die but the Word of the Lord gives the power to walk in victory through whatever we face.
Waiting upon the Lord is about seeking the Lord until He speaks to you. He speaks through His Word. He speaks by His Spirit. His Word and His Spirit always agree (1 Jn 5:7-8).
King Saul’s first sin was not to wait upon the Lord (1 Sam 13). His second was not to obey the Word of the Lord (1 Sam 15). In doing so, he rejected the Word of the Lord (1 Sam 15:23). So God sought a man who would both wait upon Him and do what He commanded (1 Sam 13:14).
David sought the Lord for direction (9 times!) and waited until he received a Word from the Lord; then David did whatever the Lord said (1 Ki 15:5).
Seek the Lord. Draw near. Wait, I say, wait upon the Lord (Ps 27:14). Build waiting upon the Lord into your day, you week, your month, your year. He knows your weaknesses. He will not let you be disgraced; but you must learn to wait upon the Lord.
Lord God, Father, forgive me for a heart of unbelief. I have lacked a heart of faith. My heart has been lifted up and has not depended upon You. For the sake of Your great name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great. Instruct me in Your ways until I seek You as a baby seeks his mother’s breast. Strengthen my soul, I pray, and then I will seek You until my soul is at rest in You, satisfied. In the Name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
